Keeshond

The German Spitz Keeshond

The Keeshond has a very rich history. The breed was named after the Dutch patriot of the 18th century, Cornelis (Kees) de Gyselaer. He led the Dutch rebellion against the House of Orange. There was a point in history where this beautiful dog almost completely disappeared. This happened when the House of Orange was returned to power. Before that happened this breed became a symbol for the rebellion. The name Keeshond is a compound word. The word “kees” is a nick name for Cornelis, and was as aforementioned the nick name of their namesake Cornelis de Gyselaer. The word “hond” is simply a Dutch word for dog. However, in Holland the word is actually used as a word to describe all German Spitz dogs. For those of you who do not know, the main difference when trying to determine the breed of a German Spitz is their size and their color. Although most breeders in Chicago recognize the breed as coming from the Netherlands, the FCI classifies them as being part of the German Spitz family. These dogs obviously are from Germany and are grouped in with the Pomeranian, and the American Eskimo Dog. In the past there has been intense lobbying in order to try and get the breed recognized as a breed of its own. The FCI would no allow this however. There reasoning was that they could not find any noticeable differences between the Keeshond and the Wolfsspitz. Later on all of these dogs were accepted and recognized, even the smaller style of the breed that is typically preferred in places like Chicago. One of the most noticeable characteristics of this breed is the thick gathering of hair around the collar. In the majority of cases the male will generally have a thicker ruff around the neck than the female. The standard size of these dogs is usually around seventeen to eighteen inches (about 45cm) in height from the withers and around 35 to 45 pounds (about 16 to 18 kg). At first glance they appear to be sturdily built dogs that have an appearance that it’s rough nor refined but more natural. They are commonly described as having a “wedge shaped”. If you have ever seen this breed in Chicago you must have noticed their beautiful feathered tail. This is commonly the look that draws most people from North America and especially Chicago in.These dogs are readily available in every major city including Chicago, but there are a few things to consider before jumping right in. The Keeshond is an extremely intelligent breed that is capable of being trained to do quite advanced activities and in a lot of cases crave this sort of attention. However, this also adds an extra bit of responsibility in terms of having to dedicate time to this sort of training. These can also be great dogs for the average family in Chicago that is just looking for a great family pet. To keep this breed in tip top condition, it is important to remember that a lot of attention to grooming is necessary. This might make the breed a little more than some people can handle.

Norwegian Buhund

Norwegian Elkhound

The Norwegian Elkhound has a very rich history and has played many roles throughout history. It is known to be one of the oldest of the ancient Northern Spitz breed. Its most important title is as the national dog of Norway. Now you can regularly see them walking with their owners about the streets of Chicago, however it wasn’t always that way. They used to serve as hunting dog and were known to make incredible hunting companions. They have also been known to be a guardian, defender, and herder or gather. The jobs that the Norwegian Elkhound excels at are not jobs that any old dog can do. For example, in their home land where there is freezing old temperatures, constant snowfall, and thick and rugged forests and mountains, it’s important to have a dog with the intelligence and strength to maneuver through these harsh conditions. Its spitz like courage most likely comes from the fact that these dogs were commonly used to hunt very large game including bears, and moose. Its roots stretch quite far back to when they were first presented at a dog show in Norway around 1877. The name for the breed is actually an exact translation from its original name from Norway. If you want to impress a breeder or dog owner in Chicago there is a little known fact about this breed that is quite commonly a trivia question between breeders. The fact is that the name in Norwegian actually means Moose, however the European settlers mistakenly called it an elk.

The breed that you know today as the Norwegian Elkhound and commonly see walking around the streets of Chicago is actually a little bit smaller than the original. The modern dogs of this breed are normally described as a medium sized dog. It has a very soft undercoat and a coarse and straight coat. The average height of this breed is typically around eighteen to twenty one inches from the withers. However, like most breeds, the females generally tend to be a little bit shorter and can be as short as 15 inches. The weight of this breed can vary but is usually around 45-60 pounds. Again, the females are generally a little bit smaller and this applies to the weight as well. They usually weigh in a little bit less than a male of the same size. The most common color of this breed is black and white however it is most commonly noted as a silver or grayish color.

The Norwegian Elkhound is known to be an outdoor dog. This means if you’re considering getting one of these dogs you’ll have to be prepared for the amount of outdoor time it requires. This may be a little problematic for people that are living the city life in Chicago. These dogs are best suited for people that lead a very active lifestyle. If you are willing to give the dog the type of attention it needs than it is a very quick learner and extremely intelligent. The dogs are also best suited for families with a big backyard and ideal for people that live in small Chicago apartments.

Samoyed

The Samoyed dog has very rich history and a great reputation among breeders all over the world and especially in Chicago. The name comes from people that lived in Siberia named the Samoyedic people. There other names for this breed however. For instance, in Europe this breed is commonly referred to as the Bjelkier. They have had many jobs throughout history but are well known as reindeer herders. This is because nomadic reindeer herders were the ones that were thought to have originally bred them. Traditionally they were bred for many different purposes. For example, they were commonly used to help with herding as pull sleds. Some say that these dogs used to sleep with their owners, so that they could keep them warm and in certain instances, it was noted that these dogs even slept on top of them as well. They were also commonly referred to as the smiling dogs because their appearance gives the impression that they are smiling. All of these things make it quite obvious that throughout history they have made for great companion dogs.

The Samoyed has a very energetic personality and has been known to retain that well into their senior years. Due to that fact these dogs are also very well known for maintaining their youthful appearance for a long time as well, perhaps longer than a lot of other breeds. Since their history as mostly a working dog they have great stamina but they also have to get a lot of regular exercise. This may not be the ideal situation for someone leading a busy Chicago lifestyle. Without this daily dose of exercise that these dogs require they can become quite depressed. This can lead to many things including boredom, destruction of property, excessive barking, and weight gain. Some people that have this problem with their dogs report having their pet try to run away a lot. Their look is a lot like the American Eskimo dog. The males usually weigh in around 20 to 32.5 kg, while the females are generally smaller than that measuring in at around 17 to 25 kg. The females are generally a lot smaller than the males perhaps more so than other breeds. Their eyes are typically black and brown, any other color is considered undesirable to breeders and owners alike. Dogs of this breed that have blue eyes are very rare and typically not allowed in the show ring of shows that are run by kennel clubs. The eyes of these dogs are usually described to be almond shaped.

The Samoyed is an extremely active dog, so if you are considering this breed as your next pet there are a lot of responsibilities that come along with owning these dogs. This is important to note because a lot of people living in Chicago lead a very busy lifestyle and might not have the time necessary to give these dogs the attention that they desperately need. However, a lot of people in Chicago these days are still able to lead an outdoor lifestyle and might be well paired with this breed.
